| Climate Change | Hazard Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation is one of the 15 outcomes of Vision 2030 Jamaica-National Development Plan being spearheaded by the Planning Institute of Jamaica. Climate change is likely to have adverse effects on the country, among them being an increase in the intensities and/frequency of natural hazards; increased drought; sea levels rise; and weakened, more fragile ecosystems. Vision 2030 highlights these as being a threat to sustainable development, and provides the framework within which corrective and preventive actions should be undertaken. In light of this, many of the activities embarked upon are aligned with related strategies and overarching objectives. The following are some of the activities of the PIOJ. - Risk and Vulnerability Assessment Methodology Project (RiVAMP) – The PIOJ facilitated the pilot testing of this United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) methodology to integrate ecosystems management with disaster risk reduction (DRR) at the local and national levels. Negril was chosen as the pilot site due to its physical vulnerability to natural hazards, coastal tourism and development pressures among others. The final report and adjustments on the methodology are currently being finalized by UNEP.
- Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Reduction Project – The PIOJ is currently spearheading the development of this project for EU funding. The project objective is to adapt to climate change and contribute to sustainable development through increased resilience of natural ecosystems and reduced risks associated with natural hazards. The project will assist various government agencies in rehabilitating watersheds; improving coastal protection; increasing climate change awareness; and building capacity at the national level to tackle climate change adaptation.
- Pilot Program on Climate Resilience (PPCR) – The PIOJ is the focal point for the PPCR which is currently being developed as an initiative under the Strategic Climate Fund (SCF), one of two Trust Funds under the World Bank’s Climate Investment Funds. It provides incentives for the integration of climate risk and resilience into development planning through scaled-up actions. Jamaica is one of the six Caribbean pilot countries slated to benefit.
